Many of us hear about China for the first time in school, when we're introduced to its long history, ancient civilization, and enormous country that is home to 24% of the world's population. We may hear tales of the Great Wall or the terra-cotta army. Maybe our teacher mentions how China feels so much older than other countries because it predates them by thousands of years. So when people talk about taking a trip to "the land where all roads lead", they are not talking about their own country... They are talking about China. China is the world's largest country by land area, but its population of 1.3 billion people has barely been heard from in mainstream American media. Such stories have been told before in Chinese-language media, and a few years ago a documentary aired on PBS that explored a few of the individual stories of these "travelers" to China. filmmaker Joe Cain met with nine Americans who have made their way to China in order to share the sights and culture. What he discovered is that these men and women aren't leaving our own country for some romantic getaway or a chance at new jobs... instead they are abandoning careers and ambitions because they believe they can achieve more in China... Their stories are very different. Some have found success by opening businesses; others turned to careers as tour guides; and several have struck deals to work as foreign teachers. What they all share is a desire to adapt and succeed in a country that is not always as open as it should be... What may surprise American audiences, however, is that China has its own fair share of people who don't necessarily want to conform to the government's rules or work for foreign companies. There are those who still think that communism "works". And finally, there are those who decided to opt out of the whole deal because they feel uncomfortable with the materialistic world all around them. "Chandni Chowk to China" is an independent film produced by Joe Cain and written, directed, and edited by Joe Cain, with Will Chan serving as producer. It was shot on location in Beijing across over three months, mostly in December 2008. The film premiered at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival on April 28, 2010. "Chandni Chowk To China" won the Award of Excellence at the 2009 WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival for Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking - Documentary. The Film was also nominated for Best Documentary feature at the 2010 Florida Film Festival where it had its International Premiere.
